Traffic safety measures desperately needed at dangerous intersection

The dangerous intersection of Tillyard and Ginninderra Drives desperately needs traffic safety measures to prevent future car accidents, Member for Ginninderra Elizabeth Kikkert said today.

“In the past week there have been two car accidents at this intersection,” Mrs Kikkert said.

“In one of those incidents three people were hospitalised and a young person underwent testing for spinal injuries.

“How many more accidents have to occur before the Labor government implements basic safety measures such as traffic lights?

“I first alerted the government to this issue almost three years ago – before I was elected. Each time, I was told that my concerns had been passed along to then Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Shane Rattenbury. I never received a single response from Mr Rattenbury.

“This neglectful approach has continued. In November, I was told in a hearing with Minister for Transport Canberra and City Services Meegan Fitzharris that a technical assessment had identified the intersections of Tillyard Drive with Ginninderra Drive and nearby Lhotsky Street as ‘points of greatest concern’.

“Why then did Minister Fitzharris inform residents earlier this year that possible improvements to the intersection would be considered in future?

“Residents who face this dangerous intersection as part of their daily travels deserve more than a vague suggestion that something might be done in future. The two car crashes this week highlights the cost of delay,” Mrs Kikkert concluded.
