Public Art for Belconnen

I love public art and its ability to create a sense of place. If I had my way, we would have much more of it in Canberra. Such art does not need to be expensive. The most inviting cities are often vibrant with paint, including murals on the sides of shops or applied to structures such as bridges and walls.

The word public means ‘of the people as a whole’ or ‘concerning ordinary people’. This means that public art cannot be concentrated in only one section of a city, especially the city centre. In the Assembly today, I spoke on behalf of Belconnen residents who would love to see more public art in Belconnen and invited the ACT Government to support the painting of murals at local shops or on public infrastructure.
